A Musical evening with Friends
The Squids Dramatic And Musical Society had its first performance last Saturday at Burnie Brae, Chermside, when an appreciative audience enjoyed two hours of music and fun. The group is to be congratulated for their endeavours as they were supporting the Queensland Institute of Medical Research as well as entertaining.
The programme covered the range of singing, dance and comedy spread over the two hours. The music was very wide ranging from the Andrews Sisters “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” through hits from some of the better known musicals since the war together with a couple of stand alone classics. To give variety to the programme, the Rise and Shine Troupe performed the Can Can to the happy audience.
The performance by the Squids Chorus of songs from the musical “Les Miserables” was particularly noteworthy as was James Riley’s “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” from the same show. Gemstone had the ability to “sell” a song and had the audience laughing with them. Outstanding to me were the two songs by Rose Shinowa who has a real talent. The men added the comedy with a performance of the well known piece “The Four Men from Yorkshire.”
A little polish to the staging would have enhanced the overall effect. Well done for a first effort.
