Moreton Celtic Fiddle Club - Lyell Deer Farm

On a recent Sunday afternoon, whilst tasting several venison delights and local wines at Lyell Deer Farm we were entertained by the Moreton Celtic Fiddle Club. Musicians included, violinists, cellists, guitarists, keyboard, not to mention the piper who joined in playing fiddle after his solo efforts.

This group of young (and not so young – according to the Moreton Council’s website those aged from 5 to 74 are welcome) musicians was led very capably and cheerfully by Melinda Gilkes. The group caters not only to school age enthusiasts but also to adults who enjoy playing.  It has been a rapidly expanding group – they are outgrowing their rehearsal space and their sound is good even though they have been going a relatively short time.  Melinda is a bright announcer, good communicator and leader and a very talented harpist and fiddler.

Her young protégés play with enthusiasm and joy, a joy which is readily communicated to the audience. Their dedication, obvious hours of practice and delight in performance are great to see and hear.

The audience loved the tunes and reels and were sad to hear that the last number was approaching. Feet were tapping, hands were clapping and smiles were broad (and not only in the audience) The joy was infectious.
The group is starting to expand into other types of music i.e. chamber music and this will only improve after further practice and rehearsals.
Mention must be made of the pretty outfits the young ladies wore for their chamber music numbers and the various kilts worn by all for the Celtic ones. What a great look.

Lyell Deer Farm is certainly worth a visit especially when such interesting taste treats and entertainment are provided. It was a most enjoyable way to pass a Sunday afternoon  (And we all enjoyed watching the very young ones feeding the deer- the various reactions were just great)
