The Gatekeeper by Richard Blackburn

The Author

Richard Blackburn comes from a family of storytellers and was raised on a rich diet of English folklore. It is this rich history that has provided the nucleus of The Gatekeeper. English-born Richard now lives in the Caboolture area.

The Book

The story involves a modern day student who finds herself transported back to Merry Olde England of the 100 Years War. Jenny's adventures and misadventures are curiously entwined and the story becomes a bit of a 'Coming of Age' trial for the heroine. This is a story of a culture clash with a difference.

Well researched, joy comes from discovering life in another time. Fascination comes from discovering how many modern day traditions have their roots in the past. Historically accurate, this book is an entertaining way of introducing readers to history in general and England of the Middle Ages in particular. Aimed at the Youth market (pre-teen to mid-teen), it is an easy read for the young reader and the young at heart reader.

The Gatekeeper is the first book in a trilogy involving heroine Jenny. The Second Book, Rudigor's Revenge, has been selected for the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge 2010 for Grades 7-9. It joins The Gatekeeper on the list.
