NO HORRORS IN THIS PRODUCTION

October 2010

Little Shop of Horrors is a black comedy musical that I was looking forward to seeing but to be honest, I was less than impressed that the audience was made to wait outside in the rain for 15 minutes after the well advertised time for the doors to open.

Then the band struck up and it was obvious that under the direction of Mark Beilby, they were going to be well rehearsed and extremely competent. The trio of Melissa Beilby, (Crystal) Jacki Drinnen (Ronnette) and Stephanie Beasy (Chiffon) warmed us up for what was to be a fantastic choral number “Skid Row”.

The storyline follows the adventures of a hapless florist shop worker, Richard Muller (Seymour) who finds an exotic plant which he raises by feeding it on human blood. Muller was perfect for the part. He had the nerdish looks, acting skills and great vocal range necessary. Matching him in talent was Patrick-James Dickson (Mr. Mushnik) the florist shop owner. Seymour names his plant after his secret love Audrey played delightfully by Maureen Bowra. Many of you will have seen either the low budget 1960 film starring Jack Nicholson or the 1986 musical version starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.

Prima’s production, directed beautifully by Angela Witcher had a Goth theme which suited this black comedy to a tee and it was great to see the front of house crew entering into the spirit of the show. The dancing and singing were fantastic, and the puppetry displaying the growth of the evil Audrey !! was handled adeptly and with style by Hayden Beilby fronting for the wonderful voice of Peter Langshaw. It’s a pity that the puppet makers weren’t given credit in the programme. The costumes were delightful and the set basic but very functional.

All in all, this is the best show I have seen from this company since their first production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. This is a great fun show. Be sure to book early to avoid disappointment.
