Internationally Recognised Aboriginal Artist gives into pressure and opens his Murrumba Downs studio and gallery to the public.
Contemporary Murrumba Downs artist Lloyd Hornsby (Gawura) will be opening his art studio/gallery on the 5th November for the first time to the public. Lloyd Hornsby is constantly asked how he paints his 3mt x 2 mt colourful canvases rolled out flat on a bench, how does he mix his paints for such a large area and achieve balance. Lloyd will now be sharing his artistic ability with the public.
Over the past six years since going professional as an artist, Mr Hornsby travels each year to North West Queensland teaching children about Indigenous art and culture during their school holidays; worked with the Regional Libraries, Primary and High Schools in South East Queensland to educate Indigenous and Non Indigenous Australians on Aboriginal Culture; Exhibited in Queensland and New South Wales; raised money for Indigenous Heart Research; and in his spare time, works with disadvantaged Indigenous Children through the local Redcliffe Indigenous Men’s Group.
Mr Hornsby is a proud Indigenous man and went to university at the age of 58 to gain a degree in Aboriginal art and studies. He said it was important to teach the younger generation about Indigenous art. “A lot of children are losing their culture and art can bring it back” Mr Hornsby said. “They go home and ask questions so they can learn stories. Aboriginals never wrote a word, they painted it all” Mr Hornsby said the workshops throughout Queensland and New South Wales have been so successful, that the public are now wanting to book workshops with him in his studio.
Lloyd Hornsby is a successful International Artist whose large colourful canvases offer an all-encompassing overview taking white symbolism and integrated it with Indigenous symbols.
